Melbourne petrol price questions
What's the cheapest day to buy petrol in Melbourne?
Right now there isn't a reliable one. The ACCC says cycles have mostly not occurred in Melbourne since late February 2026. We've just started recording Melbourne's prices, so our own day-by-day check isn't ready yet. Choosing a cheaper station is the surer saving.
Does Melbourne have a petrol price cycle?
In 2025 the ACCC measured Melbourne's cycle at around 6 weeks on average. Since late February 2026 it says cycles have mostly not occurred there. We've only just started recording it, so our own check isn't ready yet.
Does diesel follow the petrol price cycle?
No. The ACCC says retail diesel and LPG prices do not move in price cycles; they follow wholesale costs. The cycle applies to unleaded petrol, including E10, 95 and 98, which tend to move together.
Where does this data come from?
Every price comes from the Victorian Government Fair Fuel (Servo Saver) open data, which station operators must report to. Each day we take every Melbourne station's regular unleaded (ULP 91) price at about 7am and record the middle (median) price, so one very cheap or very dear station can't skew it. Published with a 24-hour delay, so each Melbourne figure is for the day before it was collected.
